Quy Nhon Port held a ceremony for the three millionth tons of cargo loaded on December 13. This marked a turning point in its development. Director of Quy Nhon Port talks more about the event.
Q: What do you think about this event?
A: We are really happy and proud of the achievement. Quy Nhon Port reached one millionth tons of cargo loaded for the first time in 1999 and 2003 marked the two millionth tons of cargo shipped.
The three million tons of cargo proved the stable and constant development of Quy Nhon Port. It has partly contributed to the socio-development of Binh Dinh and Central Highlands and southern central provinces.
Under projects on upgrading Quy Nhon Port for the 1995-2000 and 2001-06 periods worth VND250.3 billion, Quy Nhon Port is expected to have the loading capacity of 2.2 million tons per year in 2006. With only VND132 billion invested in upgrading the port, the number of cargo shipped this year is, therefore, very significant.
Quy Nhon Port is considered as the top one in the central coastal region and one of ports nationwide having an effective operation.
Q: What do you think about the development of Quy Nhon Port?
A: We weren't surprised by the result for it was the success of our strategic development. We have made much effort to have the achievement. Last year saw 2.671 million tons cargo shipped, accounting for 21 percent of the loading capacity.
Central and local bodies and agencies helped us no end. We also highly appreciate the cooperation of ship owners, shipbrokers for the mutual benefits and development.
We quickly adapted to the market mechanism and international integration. Basing on that, Quy Nhon Port has effectively operated, improving the capacity. Alongside the improvement of infrastructure, we also focus on developing highly qualified staff and management.
Q: What needs to be done to meet the demand on socio-economic development in the future?
We plan to invest about VND80 billion in upgrading equipment to enhance the loading capacity. We submitted a proposal on setting up a 30,000-ton-wharf for the authority's approval.
Another 200-meter-wharf worth VND300 billion, meeting international standards, is expected to be operational by late 2009.
We will also try to expand the market, aiming to attract more cargos from Southern provinces of Laos and Cambodia. We hope Quy Nhon Port will gradually become a port of East-West Economic Corridor in the coming time.
