Binh Dinh's aquiculture industry has positive signs this year. The export turnover reached US$26.78 million, a surge of 66.4 percent over 2006. Director of Binh Dinh Department of Aquiculture, Tran Thi Thu Ha, talks more about its development orientation in the upcoming time.

Q: What do you think about the effectiveness of aquaculture for export this year?

A: This year's quotas of the aquiculture industry are higher than those of previous year. Fishermen partly overcame difficulties caused by the ever-increasing price of fuel to work effectively.

Also, the export turnover strongly increased thanks to the stable markets, the application of advanced technologies, and the raw material import.

The 2007's output considerably went up, in which the number of whiteleg shrimps (penaeus vannamei) got the high economic effectiveness. After years of propaganda, the area for the shrimp hatching and the diversification has been expanded, enhancing the quality and output.

Q: Many floods made the water environment cleaner, expecting a bumper harvest next year. What will be done to help fishmen?

A: Recent floods improved the water environment, but after studying carefully, we realized that the source of water has still been dirty, making the shrimp hatching more harm than good at this time. Also, due to the floods, shrimp ponds were much damaged. If there is any epidemic disease, the spread will be able to quickly happen.

We, therefore, advised them to carry out the shrimp hatching late to avoid disadvantages mentioned above.

Q:  In your opinion, what must be done to help the aquiculture industry accelerate for the sustainable development?

A: It's necessary to further the process of aquatic products by diversifying and developing products. Advanced technologies are encouraged to be applied for improving the quality.

We will also strengthen the food safety, ensuring the competitiveness of aquatic products in the world market.

Key products will have their own trademarks. The trade promotion and export markets will be improved. Export enterprises will be also provided more information.
