Driving force
The Prime Minister has approved a master plan on socio-economic development of the central key economic zone, aiming to turn it into an entrepot and a centre of trade and processing industry in the greater Mekong region and the whole Asia-Pacific by 2025.
The development master plan designs four satellite urban areas, namely Hue , Quy Nhon, Van Tuong and Nui Thanh, taking Da Nang city as heart, to attract foreign and domestic investment.
These urban areas are expected to boost the development of the sea-born economy, and form an international trade and economic corridor based on the National Highway No 1A, the national railway and a chain of sea ports.
In addition, the local seaports will be connected with border gates to Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
To be a leading role playing as the driving force of the central key economic zone, a strategy to develop the seaport system in Binh Dinh is crucial.
Under the development strategy by 2020, Binh Dinh will upgrade current seaports and newly build seaports to meet the demand for socio-economic development.
Upgrade existing seaports
Currently, Binh Dinh has two seaports, including Quy Nhon and Thi Nai. These will be upgraded to increase the capacity in the coming time.
Quy Nhon Port will be developed in two phases. Accordingly, more than VND50 billion will be invested in the first phase, from 2008-10. The second will have the investment capital of nearly VND180 billion to upgrade the passage.
Aslo, more than VND50 billion will be invested in upgrading Thi Nai Port and its warehouses. As planned, its cargo volume will increase from 800,000 to one million tons by 2010.
After being upgraded, both seaports are expected to have the total capacity of 8 million tons by 2020.
Build new seaports
Two new seaport projects have being implemented in Binh Dinh now.
Nhon Hoi Gemadept International Port JSC kicked off the construction of Nhon Hoi deep water seaport worth VND3,700 billion in Nhon Hoi Economic Zone on July. The port has been built on an area of 165 ha, allowing three tons of cargo volume transported each year.
A tariff general port will also be built in Nhon Hoi EZ on an area of 119 hectares. It will include a 1,180-meter-wharf for container ships.
Alongside these, Binh Dinh planned to newly build other ports such as Tam Quan port with three wharves, De Gi with five wharves, let alone a 20-ha anchorage and Dong Da as well as petroleum ports.
