Quy Nhon city is one of three provinces in Vietnam selected to join the project on building capacity to adapt to climate change in the city. This could be an opportunity for Quy Nhon to prevent, reduce, overcome, and adapt to the global climate change. Rockefeller Foundation’s Stephen R. Tyler talks more about the issue.
What are criteria for selecting cities to join the project?
The criteria include many items, such as the vulnerable level, the sensitiveness towards impacts of the climate change, the local residents’ adaptation, and the financial management of local authorities.
We selected four countries, including India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam from which 4-5 cities will be selected to join the project. In Vietnam, we decided to choose cities of Da Nang, Quy Nhon, and Can Tho.
How about Quy Nhon city?
Quy Nhon is a well-developed coastal city, but it has been much affected by the global climate change. Noteworthy is that there are many universities, colleges as well as professional high schools in Quy Nhon, which is also an important criterion.
How about your role?
I’m in charge of pilot projects implemented in three cities in Vietnam. I will help projects in Quy Nhon, Can Tho, and Da Nang to be soon implemented. Technically, I will also help to deal with the impact of global climate change. We have a little time to carry out the project, so I must foster the project as soon as possible.
What issues are of your concern at workshops on capacity building for dealing with impacts of global climate change in Quy Nhon?
Thanks to such workshops, I understood more about Quy Nhon, issues relating to the global climate change in Quy Nhon, and difficulties the local residents and authorities faced. I was also impressed by your understanding of the global climate change.
What must be done to effectively implement the project?
At first, it’s necessary to collect all information relating to the global climate change and to have the close cooperation among relevant bodies. We have studied the climate change and its aftermath in Quy Nhon city and held some workshops.
We also cooperated with functional bodies to prepare for the implementation of the project, the establishment of steering board and project management board, as well as the investment capital. I believe that the project will be effectively implemented in Quy Nhon city, strengthening the adaptation to the global climate change.
