At present, the poultry and livestock epidemic has had the risk of breaking out nationwide. It is now under control in Binh Dinh, but the risk is still high, particularly in several weeks before the Tet holiday. Binh Dinh Newspaper reporter interviewed deputy head of provincial veterinary department Nguyen Van Quoc about the issue.
What do you think about the risk of poultry epidemic recurrence in Binh Dinh?
The nearer the Tet holiday is coming, the higher the risk of poultry epidemic recurrence is. This is due to the larger demand for meat in Tet (lunar New Year festival).
The poultry and livestock epidemic, mainly foot-and-mouth and blue ear, is very likely to recur for the germ and poultry and livestock slaughtering are not completely under control. Also, the cold air is favourable for the proliferation of the virus.
What has the provincial veterinary sector done to prevent the epidemic recurrence?
The veterinary sector has strengthened the disinfectant and vaccinations in most localities in Binh Dinh. So far, the second vaccination program has also been carried out with high results.
Also, the additional vaccinations have been carried out frequently, contributing to the poultry and livestock epidemic prevention in Binh Dinh in 2008.
What did the veterinary sector experience through the vaccination?
Thanks to the steering of provincial People’s Committee and functional bodies, the poultry and livestock epidemic prevention got positive results.
The provincial People’s Committee assigned the local authorities to steer the vaccinations. What’s more, there is a good cooperation among functional bodies and local authorities.
The provincial veterinary department also well prepared for the vaccinations, let alone the farmers’ high awareness of the vaccination.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a warning about the possible outbreak of poultry and livestock epidemic before, during, and after the Tet festival. What did the provincial veterinary department prepare for the prevention?
Alongside the vaccination, the disinfectant will be frequently carried out, particularly from Dec.25 to Jan. 25, 2009 when the peak month has been launched.
The poultry and livestock slaughtering and trading will be carefully investigated, aiming to reduce the risk of the epidemic recurrence.
Binh Dinh was allocated 300000 doses of vaccine worth nearly VND4.5 billion (roughly US$261,000) for the poultry epidemic prevention. Binh Dinh Veterinary Department will continue to carry out the vaccination in the coming time.
