Gala Co., Ltd kicked off the pearl oyster breeding project in Nhon Chau Commune on April 7. Director of Gala Co., Ltd Ho Thanh Tuan talks more about this issue.

Q: What do you think about the development of pearl oyster breeding in Vietnam?

A: Vietnam has the potential to develop the pearl oyster breeding, such as sea areas from northern province of  Quang Ninh to Kien Giang province.

Pearl oysters and their components have many uses. They can be used to make the jewelry, drugs, or food. Currently, there are 18 small-scaled enterprises specializing in pearl breeding nationwide.

As I know, Binh Dinh Department of Aquiculture had carried out a study on P.Martensii pearl in Nhon Hai Commune from 1998 to 2000.

Q: Why did Gala Company decide to invest in the pearl oyster breeding project in Nhon Chau Commune?

A: We’ve studied many sea areas and experimented the pearl oyster breeding in some provinces. But the sea area in Nhon Chau has more advantages, such as fresh water environment and physicochemical properties, which are suitable to pearl oysters living conditions.

Also, Nhon Chau is far from residential areas and there are many varieties of black-lip pearl oysters (pinctada margaritifera) living here.

After carefully studying, we proposed the pearl breeding project worth VND4 billion in Nhon Chau Commune and submitted the project for Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee’s approval.

Q: Could you brief on details of the project?

A: We plan to breed black-lip pearl oyster and make them high-valued products for export. The project will be conducted with three phases. First two phases are for pearl oysters breeding. In the last phase, pearl oysters will be collected and classified.

Selected pearl oysters are used to make pieces of jewelry and handicrafts.

Q: What do you think about the project?

A: With the black pearl oyster breeding, 40 percent of oysters with pearl can be successful. Previously, I had tried to breed black pearl oysters in Song Cau (Phu Yen province) where the water environment is not as clean as Nhon Chau, but the rate still accounted for over 40 percent. Experiences, techniques, and advantages make me believe that the pearl oyster breeding project in Nhon Chau will be successful.
