Founded in January, 1976, Quy Nhon Port has spent 32 years contributing to the socio-economic development in Binh Dinh and the South Central and Central Highlands region. In the past, it was a port mainly used for providing weapons but, at present, Quy Nhon Port has become one of 10 busy commercial ports in Vietnam.

In the past

Statistics shows that Quy Nhon Port was one of three big ports in the South, providing facilities for the American war in South Central and Central Highlands regions.

At that time, Quy Nhon Port was a 150-meter civil wharf. In 1966-67, American troops built one more military wharf to load weapons and equipment for the war.

After the national reunification, Ministry of Transport of Vietnam decided to establish Quy Nhon Port on January 19, 1976.

At present

In early years of the liberation, the country’s economy had been still in difficulty, leading to a poor investment for Quy Nhon Port. The volume of goods transported via the port had been quite limited, said Director of Quy Nhon Port, Nguyen Tin Dan.

Together with the renovation, Quy Nhon Port was allowed to conduct the new business model in 1989. A new mechanism and the recovery of Binh Dinh’s as well as central provinces’ economy played as the core role for the development of Quy Nhon Port.

The volume of goods handled at Quy Nhon Port in the past 33 years has increased by 64 times, which proved the suitable strategic development.

That is the result of the effective business and investment in infrastructure and equipment. Also, the application of advanced technologies and suitable policies contributed to enhance its prestige and competitiveness in the integration period.

Quy Nhon Port has been one of enterprises participating in many social and charitable activities. It is now members of Vietnam Port Association and ASEAN Ports Association.

Towards the future

At present, Quy Nhon Port is able to meet the demand of economic development for central provinces even though its infrastructure and equipment can’t be compared with other big ports, according to Dan.

To keep up with the development, however, it still needs to perfect many aspects. Currently, a container wharf plans to be built with advanced equipment and it is expected to be operational by late 2009.

Also, projects of improving the quality of human resources, applying IT in the management and production, upgrading equipment and infrastructure are going to be carried out.
