A seminar on the cleaner production in cassava starch processing in Hoai Hao” was held in Quy Nhon with the participation of nearly 50 scientists, experts, and the others. Binh Dinh Newspaper’s reporter Viet Hien interviewed head consultant of national SEMLA program, Mr. Per Bertilsson.

* Could you talk about the significance of the “cleaner production for cassava starch processing in Hoai Hao” project?

This is a significant project because it will bring many benefits to people. Its aim is to treat the waste, making the production more effective. Experts have helped 10 households in Hoai Hao in applying solutions for the cleaner production. The project has reduced the expenditure and waste.

Previously, the waste caused the environmental pollution, badly affecting rice, fish, and other sea products. After the project was carried out, the pollution has gradually reduced and the environment was improved.

For the first time, the project was carried out in households in Vietnam. It had been conducted in industrial zones and traditional craft villages.

* How about its effectiveness?

As mentioned above, I can affirm that the project has reaped remarkable results. After nearly six months, it has helped reduce the environmental pollution, let alone the increase of production. Also, the project changed the awareness and management. It still has, however, some drawbacks, such as high expenditure.

* Many said that the project needs to be spread over other localities. What do you think?

Realizing its effectiveness, we can spread the project over other localities. I think that functional bodies need study carefully to learn experiences and solve disadvantages. This will help households reduce expenditure, increase the production effectiveness.

Initially, other 10 households will use this model. It will be then spread gradually. We always hope that the project will be carried out in other provinces. Strengthening Environmental Management and Land Administration (SEMLA) in Nghe An and Phu Yen visited Binh Dinh to learn experiences to carry out the project in localities.

The national SEMLA program will continue to support Binh Dinh SEMLA to conduct the project, improving technologies.
