Researchers of the Institute of Strategy and Policies on Science and Technology and experts of network on water resource management, environment in Mekong region came to Binh Dinh to study Quy Nhon city’s adaptation to the global climate change. Binh Dinh Newspaper’s reporter Viet Hien spoke with Mr. Paul Kent, an Australian expert, on the issue.
* Could you brief on the study in Binh Dinh?
We worked with leaders of provincial Department of Environment and Natural Resources and some functional bodies to share experiences of Quy Nhon city’s adaptation to the global climate change.
Issues involve activities and measures to reduce, prevent the global climate change in some cities in Vietnam, including Quy Nhon. The study may be used for the project of enhancing the adaptation to global climate change funded by Rockefeller Fund.
* What are standards to participate in the program?
Among them are some main standards such as the sensitiveness to effects of the climate change, local people’s adaptation, and the management of local authorities and bodies’ leaders.
As planned, the program will be carried out through three phases. Four countries were involved in the program, including India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Each has 4-5 cities participating in the program. In Vietnam, Hue, Quy Nhon, and Can Tho are three selected cities.
* Why did researchers decide to choose Quy Nhon city for the study?
Quy Nhon is a coastal city which is well developing. It also has to suffer consequences of the climate change. More noticeably, three selected cities have universities which play as an important factor.
* How about the researchers’ activities?
We worked with representatives of provincial functional bodies and agencies. Alongside this, we also study the local people’s adaptation, particularly the poor, local authorities’ activities, and bodies’ program and development strategies.
Basing on these findings, we have to complete reports on three Vietnam’s cities by late August.
* Could you let me know some results of the study in Quy Nhon?
We knew some information about natural conditions, geography, rivers, climate, weather, environment and other factors in Quy Nhon and its suburb.
Basing on the information collected, cities which meet standards will be able to participate in the project of enhancing the adaptation to the global climate change.
