The provincial administration of Vietnam Avian and Human Influenza Control and Preparedness Project (VAHIP) was formed in September, 2007. Two groups were set up to conduct the agriculture and health components.

Districts of An Nhon, Tuy Phuoc, Phu Cat, Tay Son, Phu My, and Hoai Nhon were involved in the project because a huge amount of poultries is raised in these Districts. Detailed plans and the progress of components were well prepared.

The serum observation and virus quarantine at markets and abattoirs in Binh Dinh was effectively carried out. 580 samples (420 serum and 160 swab specimens) have been collected and tested so far.

The specimen collection was carried out under regulated procedure, ensuring the quality and accuracy. All tested specimens showed negative results.

A hot line was also set up to receive the information on the avian flu. Thanks to the hot line, Binh Dinh Veterinary Division can promptly carry out measures against the avian flu. It also helps people to acquire more knowledge of avian flu and enhance the awareness of the avian flu prevention and control.

The inspection of cases suspected of being infected with the avian flu has been carefully conducted. The information through the hot line is quickly verified. 11 of 45 cases in which the poultries were sick or dead weren’t infected with the avian flu. Other cases were inaccurately informed.

18 training courses were held in 6 Districts, improving the qualification of veterinary staff. This helped the observation, inoculation, and prevention in localities become more effective, establishing the warning system for the avian flu.

43,000 ducks were inoculated in May and June. Binh Dinh was highly appreciated thanks to its achievements in preventing and controlling the avian flu.

To improve the people’s awareness of avian flu prevention and control and prepare for dealing with the urgent situation, Binh Dinh’s agriculture sector planned to carry out the trial of avian flu prevention and inoculation in Hoai Duc commune, Hoai Nhon District in late August.
