Under the steering of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and provincial People’s Committee, agriculture sector and local authorities in Binh Dinh have implemented many measures to prevent the recurrence of avian flu in this year’s rainy season.

* Be alert to avian flu

The MARD’s Veterinary Department issued a warning about the outbreak of avian flu in Vietnam in this year’s rainy season. If the avian flu breaks out, it will widely spread, causing immeasurable consequences.

Binh Dinh has showed no sign of avian flu in the past few years, but there is now a high-risk recurrence. H5N1 avian flu virus existing in the environment tends to strongly develop in the rainy season.

Poultry will be, therefore, easily affected with H5N1 virus if they aren’t carefully looked after. Also, the slaughter of domestic animals is another factor making the avian flu spread.

Statistics by provincial Veterinary Division showed that a small number of poultry wasn’t quarantined but they were still sold at local markets.

Also, prevention measures weren’t applied when H5N1 virus-infected poultry were found. Many made the environment polluted, spreading the avian flu.

Provincial Veterinary Division warned breeders that they need to awake to the avian flu to effectively prevent and control the spread of H5N1 virus, avoiding negative consequences.

* Strengthen prevention of avian flu recurrence

With the slogan “Strengthening observation, actively preventing, finding, eliminating the recurrence of avian flu”, a board of avian flu prevention and control was formed.

1.2 million doses of vaccine, 8 million of veterinary chemical substances, and other equipment have been well prepared to prevent the avian flu in the rainy season.

“We also asked more 7 million doses of vaccine for the second phase inoculation against the epidemic which will be carried out in October,” said deputy head of provincial Veterinary Division, Nguyen Van Quoc.

At present, local authorities are preparing necessity for implementing measures against the avian flu, he added.

Provincial Veterinary Division also cooperated with the mass media to publicize measures against the avian influenza, strengthening the investigation and violations. Veterinarians and traffic police officers have carefully inspected illegal transportation of animals at checkpoints.

Vietnam Avian and Human Influenza Control and Preparedness Project (VAHIP) Administration in Binh Dinh held a rehearsal to trial measures against the avian influenza in Long Quang hamlet, Nhon Hoa commune of An Nhon District.

Functional bodies and local authorities well cooperated with each other during the rehearsal. Provincial Vice Chairwoman Binh and leaders of agriculture sectors in provinces of Phu Yen, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Ngai, and Gia Lai highly appreciated its operation.

“We held the rehearsal to enhance the organisation and management of steering board on avian flu prevention and control, functional bodies, and local authorities,” said provincial VAHIP director Phan Trong Ho.

The rehearsal was also recorded to help all people watch procedures and applied them at their localities. Binh Dinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development would continue to steer provincial Veterinary Division, functional bodies, and local authorities to quickly implement measures against the avian flu, avoiding the recurrence of avian flu, he added.
