Binh Dinh has implemented components of the WB-funded agriculture competitiveness project. Vice director of Binh Dinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Phan Trong Ho, talks more about the issue.
Could you brief us on the province’s advantages in the agriculture competitiveness?
In the agriculture sector, Binh Dinh has many advantages. The annual rice output not only meets the province’s demand for food but supply Central Highlands provinces with a large amount.
Also, other agricultural products, such as cassava, coconut, and sugar-cane have advantages for the agriculture competitiveness.
In the forestry sector, the province’s wood processing industry has strongly developed. Businesses operating in Binh Dinh have penetrated many markets worldwide. The aquatic sector is also another advantage of Binh Dinh with 700 fishing vessels and a large area for shrimp breeding.
What are the shortcomings in the agricultural production?
The natural conditions in the central province of Binh Dinh have caused many difficulties for the agricultural production, particularly in the field of cultivation, let alone shortcomings in cultivation measures and waste treatment.
Alongside these, the responsiveness to market demands, agricultural technology, and financial capacity are other factors affecting the agriculture competitiveness. The competitiveness of small-holder farmers and agribusinesses also needs fostering.
How about the agriculture competitiveness project in Binh Dinh?
Binh Dinh has joined three components of the project, including enhancement of agricultural technology, support to productive partnerships, and provision of critical infrastructure.
Under the project, there are eight studies selected for the first component. Four of them will be submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for consideration. If the MARD approved all, WB will pour about US$30,000-50,000 into each study.
Some proposals for productive partnerships were selected, including the partnerships between Nhon Hau commune and Quy Nhon tree service CO., Ltd, between communes of Nhon Tho and Nhon Tan and Binh Dinh Sugar JSC, and between Tay Thuan commune and Binh An Co., Ltd.
These proposal for productive partnerships were also submitted to the MARD for consideration. Each will receive about $100,000-500,000 when being approved.
Also, districts were asked to build infrastructure to join the “provision of critical infrastructure” component.
Joining the agriculture competitiveness project is expected to help Binh Dinh to sustainably develop the agricultural production. The province will, therefore, try to all requirements and make all-out efforts to boost the implementation of the project.
