Binh Dinh People’s Committee coordinated with HCM City University of Architecture held a workshop on Quy Nhon city planning till 2030 and vision 2050 in two days, July 18-19.

An economic centre of central key economic region

Secretary of Binh Dinh Provincial Party Committee Vu Hoang Ha, in his opening speech, said the workshop was an opportunity for experts and consultants to help functional bodies build up the city planning.

Quy Nhon will be one of 12 main cities at regional level and an economic centre of the central key economic region, Ha added.

Becoming a second-grade city for ten years, Quy Nhon is now searching for a new face. Minister of Construction Nguyen Hong Quan asked experts to reconsider the process of city planning after its adjustment has been carried out since 2004.

“It’s necessary to have a particular route and suitable measures,” he said. “Everything must be done in order.”

Quy Nhon has an area of 284.55 sq.m with the population of 280,000. Its population was forecasted to increase by 650,000 by 2030 and an area of 15,000 hectares will be required for the urban construction.

The province’s Department of Construction said Quy Nhon might be extended to the north-northeast (including Phuong Mai peninsula and Nhon Hoi Economic Zone), north-northwest (with some communes and towns in Tuy Phuoc district and the west of Thi Nai lagoon), and southwest (directing towards Van Canh district).

“The city planning also requires the participation of all people,” said Chairman of Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association, Nguyen The Ba. “It must be considered as an urgent demand.”

Architects Le Anh Dung and Ngo Minh Hung had an idea that Quy Nhon should be planned to become an economic centre in the south of the central key economic region.

It has many advantages to become a transportation hub linking roads and seaports for the service of the Central Highlands.

A unique ecological city

At the workshop, many reports presented the same space structure for Quy Nhon city. Accordingly, Quy Nhon will become a city involving sea, mountains, rivers, and lagoons.

Experiencing the architecture of world famous cities, such as Singapore, Long Beach, and Amsterdam, architects Khuong Van Muoi and Truong Thi Thanh Truc suggested approaching the strategic structure planning instead of inflexible planning with technical parameters.

They said Quy Nhon city should have so-called economic power with the seaport economy, industry and services relating to seaport as “strategic projects”.

According to the architects, a “multi-nucleus” urban is the most suitable choice for the city’s sustainable development in the future.
