The Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP) in Vietnam has implemented some projects in the central province of Binh Dinh. Nguyen Thi Kim Anh, GEF/SGP coordinator, talks more about the issue.
Could you brief me on GEF/SGP?
The GEF's mission is the protection of the global environment. It forges international cooperation and finances actions to address six critical threats to the global environment: biodiversity loss, climate change, degradation of international waters, ozone depletion, land degradation, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
Launched in 1992, GEF’s SGP supports activities of non-governmental and community-based organizations in developing countries towards climate change abatement, conservation of biodiversity, protection of international waters, reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants and prevention of land degradation while generating sustainable livelihoods.
Operating in Vietnam since 1999, GEF has funded more than 100 environment-related projects nationwide. Projects of GEF/SGP aim to attract the people’s participation to raise their awareness of environment protection.
How many GEF/SGP-funded projects have been implemented in Binh Dinh. What do you think about the process of the project implementation?
GEF/SGP has carried out four projects in Binh Dinh since 2007, including conservation and sustainable use of coastal lagoons of Thi Nai and Tra O, developing a policy for sustainable cassava production, strengthening the effectiveness of social audit and policy advocacy and using environment friendly technology in mining Inmenit (Ti) in coastal sand dunes in Phu My district
We highly valued the enthusiasm of provinces involved in projects. All leaders, relevant bodies, and local people were interested in joining GEF/SGP projects.
How to change and raise the people’s awareness is one of key targets of environment projects.
Is GEF/SGP going to fund any projects in Binh Dinh in the coming time?
Vietnam is ranked fifth which is most vulnerable to climate change. It was also selected as a typical country for the UN’s study on climate change and human development.
As planned, GEF/SGP will fund climate change adaptation projects implemented from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan provinces.
Also, GEF/SGP has coordinated with Binh Dinh Union of Science and Technology Associations to carry out the community-based food security project in Tuy Phuoc district.
Alongside this project, GEF/SGP hoped to cooperate with Binh Dinh to implement more climate change related projects in the future.
