Da Nang, Can Tho, and Quy Nhon were selected to take part in the “Capacity building for responding to global climate change” project. At present, it has been carried out in three cities.

Climate change in Quy Nhon

Climate change has become a global issue affecting many countries, including Vietnam. Quy Nhon is one of cities most affected by climate change. Experts said that the city’s weather is changeable in recent decades.

Quy Nhon saw a slight increase in temperature from 1957 to 1984, but the temperature tended to strongly rise since 1985.

The rainfall is also changeable, fluctuating from year to year. The climate change has resulted in sudden floods, alluvial soil, and landslides.

Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IMHEN) and Institute of Water, Irrigation, and Environment (IWE) have carried out a study on climate, hydrology, and vulnerable issues caused by climate change in Quy Nhon in the future.

According to the study, the average sea level will rise by 11.6 cm and the rainfall is expected to increase by 0.6 percent by 2020.

By 2050, the temperature in dry season will increase more rapidly than in rainy season; whilst, the average temperature is forecasted to go up, compared with the period of 1980-1999.

Climate change is believed to affect many fields, including infrastructure, traffic system, dykes, drainage system, and irrigation work.

Positive beginnings

Number of domestic and overseas experts met in Quy Nhon on August 27 to share their experiences in coping with climate change.

They presented research on dealing with disasters, experiences in disaster control and the results of a number of pilot models on disaster control used in Quy Nhon city .

The workshop was held by Binh Dinh People’s Committee in coordination with the Canadian Institute for Social and Environmental Transition (ISET) and Challenge to Change, a non-governmental organisation from the UK.

After the workshop, a technical supporting team evaluated risks and vulnerability in Nhon Binh ward and Nhon Ly commune.

In Binh Dinh , the project has been carried out in many districts and has helped the local authorities and residents to effectively cope with climate change.

The province’s project management board has also coordinated with the Centre of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment to carry out studies and with IWE to evaluate the most vulnerable areas in Quy Nhon city.

Also, at the workshop, experts highly appreciated the province’s steering board and management board. Their members have help the province implement some small projects.

After the talk with representatives of ISET and CtC, three pilot projects will be implemented, according to Dinh Van Tien, director of the project management board.
