Which way to develop?

The Phu Tai and Long My industrial zones (IZs) have seen high industrial production and export turnover value in 2010. The businesses operating in these IZs are now striving to implement measures to boost their production.

Strong recovery

The businesses operating in two IZs were seriously affected by the global financial crisis and economic recession in 2008-2009. They have seen signs of recovery this year but still faced many difficulties, including the shortage of power, labor forces, and loans.

The enterprises have made every effort to promote their production, such as applying advanced technologies and facilities, improving management skills for leaders, and offering more vocational training courses for laborers.

Many of them also enhanced the trade promotion and joined many fairs, leaving a good impression on consumers. The businesses focusing on the same products coordinated with each other for further development. The granite companies were, for example, linked together to explore some mines in districts of An Nhon, Phu Cat, and Tuy Phuoc.

A website featuring Binh Dinh’s granite was also set up, helping the manufacturers and customers easily connect with each other.

Via the Binh Dinh Stone Processing and Exploitation Association, the website’s owner, the stone processing companies are able to take full advantages of scale, advanced technologies and markets, according to Pham Xuan Thuy, the association’s Chairman.

The businesses operating in two IZs reached an industrial production value of over VND2 trillion, a surge of 37.5 percent. Their export turnover also got US$168 million, a rise of 10 percent against the same period last year.

What must be done for further development?

The 2010’s result has showed signs of recovery and development in these IZs, said To Dinh Su, an official of the province’s Economic Zone Authority. However, the businesses still have to suffer from great pressure caused by the post-crisis and negative effects of the market.

The development mainly focused on the quantity while the quality, effectiveness, and competitiveness were still low, he added.

The businesses as well as relevant bodies must try harder and harder in the coming time. As for businesses, they need to carefully plan and balance the investment capital, improve the technologies, and implement measures to reduce expenses and enhance the competitiveness.

Granite processing companies must apply new facilities to save their raw materials whilst forest products processing enterprises should give more attention to high added value indoor furniture.

As for functional bodies, the administrative reform in the field of export need to be promoted, creating the most favourable conditions for businesses. The license granting for those operating in the field of minerals processing also required simplification.
