Wooden furniture paid more attention

The province’s wood processing sector has still faced many difficulties. In the first two months this year, its export turnover value saw a reduction of 1.3 percent against the previous year’s corresponding period. Chairman of Binh Dinh Forest Products Association (FPA Binh Dinh), Nguyen An Diem, talks more about the issue.

What do you think about Binh Dinh’s wood processing sector this year?

It has showed signs of recovery since November last year. Many experts said the number of orders for outdoor furniture would increase in 2010.

However, wood processing companies in Binh Dinh will still face big challenges, requiring them to make all-out effort owing to many reasons, such as high expenses, the shortage of manpower and raw material.

What does FPA Binh Dinh recommend for the companies?

The outdoor furniture has seen the market saturation; thus, the profit rate of outdoor furniture export is no longer high.

Vietnam’s indoor furniture has only accounted for 1 percent in the world market so far whilst the indoor furniture market quickly recovered in 2010, particularly in the US.

More opportunities are, therefore, offered to wooden products in Vietnam in general and Binh Dinh in particular. Focusing on indoor furniture production is the right direction, but it’s necessary to carefully work out suitable measures, aimed at reducing the production expenses and enhancing the competitiveness capacity.

Which measures are suitable for the indoor furniture development?

This is an urgent issue. Developing the indoor furniture requires cooperation, helping reduce the expenses and increase the production capacity.

To penetrate the US market, wood processing companies must coordinate with each other. Alongside this, the number of designers and the technical manpower training need paying great attention, let alone the trade promotion and combination between indoor and outdoor products.

The province’s wood processing sector is facing many disadvantages due to the changes of the world market and high competitiveness. Wood businesses in Binh Dinh, therefore, need to coordinate together to boost the indoor furniture production immediately.

What is FPA Binh Dinh going to do to support its members this year?

The FPA Binh Dinh’s key task is to implement programs boosting the cooperation among wood processing companies. The indoor furniture production will be given priority with the participation of 4-5 businesses.

With the support from experts, FPA Binh Dinh will offer its members training courses, technology transfer, and production procedures, helping businesses get familiar with the new model of indoor furniture production.

Also, the association’s management and external affairs will be strengthened. Businesses, which are FPA Binh Dinh’s members, will be aided in training highly skill workers and improving their trade promotion as well as other issues.
