Binh Dinh-based Anh Viet Trading Co., Ltd is one of companies paying attention to FSC rules.

Bureau Veritas Certification (BVC) Vietnam’s experts said that in a workshop with the participation of Binh Dinh–based wood processing companies in Quy Nhon city. BVC Vietnam’s General Director, Nguyen Ngoc Khoa, talks more about the issue.

Could you brief us on BVC and FSC rules?

Since its foundation in 1828, the Bureau Veritas Group has consistently built recognized expertise, helping clients comply with standards and regulations relating to quality, health and safety, environment and social responsibility.

BVC is the world’s leading certification body recognized by many countries and international bodies. It is now having more than 280 clients in 140 countries.

Forest Sterwardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established in 1993 to promote responsible forest management worldwide.

FSC certificates are comprised of two main types, that is, forest management certification (FSC-FM) and FSC Chain of Custody certification (FSC-CoC).

Forest managers or owners who want to prove that their forest operation are socially beneficial and managed in an environmentally appropriate and economically viable manner can apply for FSC-FM.

FSC-CoC is for companies that manufacture, process or trade in timber or non-timber forest products and want to demonstrate to their customers that they use responsibly produced raw materials.

Why are FSC standards important to woodwork exporters?

The FSC is a certification system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry.

The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.

Being FSC certified means that woodwork exporters could easily get public and consumer recognition of their responsible practices and allows them to access highly environmentally sensitive markets.

After Vietnam integrated into the WTO, the FSC’s role is more and more important because it has the only globally valid standard that meets no barrier to trade worldwide.

What must woodwork exporters in Binh Dinh do for the sustainable development?

Binh Dinh is one of four woodwork hubs in Vietnam. The FSC standards are thus more important in Binh Dinh. However, many wood processing companies haven’t paid attention to international standards, including FSC rules.

The province’s woodwork export sector has potential for growth, but woodwork exporters need to take full advantage of it.

The world’s technical barrier is the biggest obstacle; therefore, wood processing businesses must focus on enhancing the production capacity, following the FSC standards.

BVC Vietnam will always work side by side with woodwork exporters in Binh Dinh, aimed at helping them improve their capacity for production and export.
