Positive signs in early third quarter

The Director of Dai Thanh Furniture Joint Stock Company Le Van Luong said the company had been badly affected by not only the global economic-financial crisis but also the pressure of competitiveness.

Its staff made every effort to overcome the difficulties, maintaining the enterprise’s stable manufacturing while improving its product design and quality, expanding its export markets. The company gained a nearly 9.7-million-USD worth export turnover in the first six months of 2010, an over 100 percent increase against the same period last year.

Besides Dai Thanh, many other enterprises also got high growth of export turnover, including Tien Dat Furniture Corporation (approximately 18 million USD, a rise of nearly 23 percent compared with the same period of 2009), Phu Tai Joint Stock Company (more than 7.5 million USD, over 43 percent increase), My Tai Co., Ltd (nearly 3.4 million USD, over 30 percent increase).

According to the statistical figure by Binh Dinh Department of Industry and Trade, the province’s total export turnover reached 23.4 million USD in July, an increase of 21 percent over the previous year’s corresponding period.

Its total export turnover over the first 7 consecutive months was 258 million USD, making up about 74 percent of the yearly target and achieving an increase of 34.2 percent compared with the same period of 2009.

Notably, among the export products, forest products were estimated to make up 151.3 million USD, accounting for 74.2 percent of the targeted plan and getting a 46.9 percent increase in compared with the same period last year.

Eucalyptus shavings particularly reached nearly 220,000 tones (increase more than 147,000 tones) with export turnover of around 24 million USD (a 16-million-USD worth increase). Outdoor refined timber attained to an export quantity of 90,000 cubic meters (an increase of over 33,000 c.b meters) with turnover of 120 million USD (roughly 29 million higher). Interior refined timber got an export quantity of 3.100 c.b meters (an increase of 1,100 c.b meters) with turnover of 4.2 million USD (963.00 USD higher).

Keep on the progressing impetus

The achievements are giving the Binh Dinh–based woodwork exporters an important impetus to keep on the effort of overcoming the obstacles in the remaining path.

The enterprises would encounter technical and commercial barriers set up by USA and EU, said Chairman of Forest Products Association of Binh Dinh (FPA Binh Dinh) Nguyen An Diem. They would face a lot of difficulties caused by the US Lacey Act, particularly the FSC chain of Custody (FSC-CoC) while many of them were solving problems of labor resource.

Given such challenges, Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee, the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, FPA Binh Dinh and other authorized agencies put forward policies and solutions to help the enterprises stabilize their businesses and develop their export activities.

FPA Binh Dinh suggested that the provincial People’s Committee, State Bank and commercial banks in Binh Dinh should continue their policies of preferential interest rate support and interest rate cut for the woodwork exporters.

FPA Binh Dinh also asked authorized agencies to assist the enterprises in labor training fees, social and health insurance alleviation or exemption, timber tax alleviation or exemption, logistics service fee cut.

Moreover, FPA Binh Dinh continued to keep its close relationships with national and international organizations such as Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry – VCCI, Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, Handicraft and Wood Industry Association (HAWA), and Malaysian Timber Council (MTC).

Meanwhile, FPA Binh Dinh would push up its export promotion activities and support for its members, organize capacity building training courses on management and wood processing technology, speed up the introduction of the products to customers, and intensify market information seeking (about the customers and demand) to help the enterprises. FPA has been improving an e-commerce network of Binh Dinh wood processing industry, creating a bridge for the development of enterprises.
