Modernizing Quy Nhon seaport

Thanks to the Central budget, Quy Nhon seaport constructed a new 30,000-DWT pier between 2005 and 2009, dredging its anchorages and waterways with the capital of over VND 59 billion.

With its 30,000-DWT pier, Quy Nhon seaport gives easy access to large vessels.

In the last 5 years (2005-2009), the cargo throughput of Quy Nhon seaport increased 63 percent (from 2.4 million to over 4 million tonnes), its turn of ships in and out the port raised by 35 percent, and its total assets grew by 8 percent (from VND181 billion-VND352.9 billion).

In the context of severe competitiveness against other seaports in the central region, Quy Nhon seaport still plays an important role in trading, partly contributing to the socio-economic development of the southern central coastal and Central Highlands provinces.

The recent significant growth of Quy Nhon seaport resulted from its inner-strength promotion, its self-motivation, innovation in business operation, its exact prediction of the regional economic situation to draw up a strategy as a preparation for development trends, and its right and highly efficient investment in infrastructure, equipment and facilities, said General Director of Quy Nhon Seaport One-Member Co., Ltd, Nguyen Tin Dan.

Between 2005 and 2009, with the Central budget, the sea port constructed a new 30,000-DWT pier, dredging its anchorages and waterways with over VND-59-billion investment. It also invested over VND175 billion (including nearly VND80 billion in 2009 only) in more facilities, loading and unloading equipment, and container management system.

According to the Prime Minister's Decision No. 148/2004/QD-TTg of August 13, 2004, on major orientations for socio-economic development of the central key economic region till 2010, with a vision to 2020, the Quy Nhon seaport was one of 10 key ports nationwide.

The port would be given priority of investment for sake of the socio-economic development of the central key economic region. It is expected to play an important role of the East-West Economic Corridor as well as the gateway to the East Sea of the Mekong sub-region.

Relevant authorities predicted that the cargo throughput via the Quy Nhon seaport in the 2010-2015 period would reach approximately 6-7.5 million tonnes and 18-20 million tonnes by 2020. Turns of large vessels in and out the port would be around 350-400 turns/year; cargo of 10,000-30,000 DWT vessels would make up rather considerable percentage.
