Boosting La Tinh irrigation pilot project
13:40', 14/1/ 2011 (GMT+7)

Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was assigned to carry out the La Tinh irrigation pilot project funded by ADB in 2011. At present, functional bodies have been urging the contractors to speed up the progress, striving to finish the project in late 2011.

The contractors speed up the progress of the pilot project in My Tai commune

The La Tinh irrigation pilot project belonging to the central irrigation project funded by ADB has been implemented in 9 communes of Cat Son, Cat Lam, Cat Hanh, Cat Tai, Cat Minh (Phu Cat district), My Tai, My Hiep, My Cat, and My Chanh (Phu My district) since 2007.

The pilot project includes two components, that is, improving the irrigation management system and upgrading the irrigation infrastructure.

It aims to improve the irrigation management system and the capacity for water usage, aiming to supply enough water to 3,111 hectares of cultivation land and 300 hectares of water surface for aquaculture.

The project is also aimed at upgrading the dyke system at the lower course of La Tinh River, protecting 30,000 lives and 1,427 hectares of agricultural land from disaster.

The project is expected to help Binh Dinh improve the irrigation works in two districts of Phu Cat and Phu My, better serving the agricultural production and safely protecting the locals living around the La Tinh River during floods.

The households partly affected by the pilot project received money as part of compensation and the contractors are now carrying out their works.

The provincial project management unit (PPMU) said the contractors actively implemented their tasks, meeting the progress and quality. However, some items haven’t met the requirements.

Under the commitment between Vietnam Government and ADB, the pilot project must be finished by late this year. Not much time has been left; thus, the contractors have to be determined to fulfill their works.

“All works must end in late 2011,” said Phan Xuan Hai, the PPMU’s director. “The contractors are, hence, required to speed up the progress while we always work out timely measures to resolve difficulties. We do believe that the pilot project will meet the deadline.”
