Binh Dinh fishermen have bumper season of tuna skipjack exploitation

Merchants are purchasing the tuna skipjack at Quy Nhon fishing port.

Hundreds of Binh Dinh fishing boats got very good harvests of tuna skipjack in the early season of offshore tuna exploitation. Every day, at Quy Nhon fishing port, tens of fishing boats are arriving shore with full holds of sea products, almost tuna skipjack.

Quy Nhon city only has a fleet of 173 fishing boats with horsepower of 250-400 CV, which specialize in offshore tuna skipjack. All of the boats have caught a lot of fish. Each fishing trip brought at least 5-6 tonnes of the tuna skipjack, yielding a turnover of 150-180 million VND.

Because of the bumper crop of the tuna skipjack, prices of the fish are reducing to about 30,000 VND/kg, 5,000 VND lower than fortnight earlier. Although the prices are lower, all of the boats get interest thanks to their high exploitation outputs.

The tuna skipjack are being sold all over Binh Dinh and other neighbour provinces of Gia Lai, Phu Yen, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, etc.

Many of the fishing boats are preparing materials (fuel, drinking water, ice, indispensable foodstuff) for their offshore tuna skipjack exploitation trips.

The offshore tuna skipjack exploitation requires big investments. The fishermen have to invest at least 2.5 billion VND for a new boat building, necessary fishing-net and tool purchase. Each boat expenses 70-100 million VND/fishing trip.

If the boat owners are lucky to enjoy a 4-5-month-lasting bumper season of the tuna skipjack exploitation, they may get back the investment and the interest within only one season. The fishermen also enjoy high incomes from the job.
