Tuy Phuoc district has so far enjoyed bumper harvests of farm-raised shrimp in 2011 thanks to right time of hatchery/nursery, effective disease prevention and control, expansion of environment-friendly shrimp farming areas, application of advanced technologies into the shrimp farming.

In 2011, Tuy Phuoc has more than 969 hectares of shrimp farming as planned, reports Tuy Phuoc Office of Agriculture and Rural Development. Out of which, nearly 94 hectares are for white leg shrimp culture in the first harvest; over 86 hectares in the second harvest. The rest areas are for the raising of the shrimp and other kinds of aquatic animals, like crabs and fish with improved extensive culture practices and controlled harvest-supplementary breeding methods.

Tuy Phuoc finishes the harvests with productivity of over 965kg/hectare, 184 kg/hectare higher than last year. Output of the farm-raised shrimp reaches 936 tonnes (8.6% increase), output of other aquatic products reaches 446 tonnes (2.19% increase). Productivity of the white leg shrimp is 4-7 tonnes/hectare, brining high profits to the shrimp farmers. For example, Mr. Lam Thanh De, who raises the white leg shrimp over an area of 3.7 hectares at Phuoc Son commune, gains 50 tonnes of the shrimp products and 1.5-billion-VND net interest.

Such high yields of the farm-raised shrimp result from a newly-operated of fresh water irrigational canal system, fishery promotion policies of Tuy Phuoc government.. Many models of environment-friendly shrimp farming have been established. A model of common tiger prawn – mullet mixed culture, common tiger prawn – tilapia mixed culture over an area of 23.5 hectare is also built up with fund from the Agriculture Competitiveness Project in Binh Dinh. The model yields an average interest of more than 50 million VND/hectare. Local shrimp farmers are expanding the model after study-tours.

In spite of the good harvests, Tuy Phuoc shrimp farmers also experiences losses because of the diseases over an area of more than 20 hectares, twofold higher than last year.

Tuy Phuoc will keep on its policies on sustainable aquaculture in 2012. It expects to have 917 hectares of shrimp farming with productivity of over 1 tonnes/hectare and total output of 1,000 tonnes. Out of which, 100 hectares will be for intensive or semi-intensive culture. The rest areas will be for the environment-friendly improved extensive culture. The new harvest will start on March 1, 2012.

To prevent and control the shrimp diseases, the district authorities warn to apply biological methods into treatment of waste from the shrimp farms, raise the shrimp with mullets, not with crabs, only raise quarantined breeding shrimp.

Furthermore, the district government will intensify its fight against prohibited electricity-shock catching practices and illegal aquaculture in 4 communes of Phuoc Thuan, Phuoc Son, Phuoc Hoa and Phuoc Thang around Thi Nai Lagoon.
