Positive signs

Like other companies, Anh Viet Trading Co., Ltd also faced many difficulties last year due to the global financial crisis and economic recession as well as technical barriers from the U.S and EU.

However, the company made every effort to overcome the challenges to improve the quality of its products and competitiveness and expand more markets. Its export turnover value showed signs of growth in 2010.

Alongside its traditional partners, the company has boosted its trade promotion to seek new markets and more partners, according to the company’s director Dong Thi Anh. As a result, in the first month of 2011, its export turnover surpassed 29 percent compared to the same period last year.

The statistics released by Department of Industry and Trade showed the province’s total export turnover was estimated to reach nearly US$46 million in Jan., 2011, accounting for 9.9 percent of the yearly plan and rising by 15.2 percent over the previous year’s corresponding period.

Among the figures, non-State owned businesses earned US$43.2 million whilst foreign invested ones saw a value of US$1.2 million.

Towards a “bumper crop”

As planned, Binh Dinh is expected to earn a total export turnover value of US$460 million this year, a rise of 9.5 percent compared to 2011. Accordingly, agricultural products will reach a value of US$77 million, forestry products will earn US$282 million, seafood will see an export turnover value of US$42 million, and minerals and construction materials will strive to reap US$33 million.

However, the operation of local businesses hasn’t still been sustainable. Most non-State owned enterprises reach high export turnover value and see considerable growth while State owned ones are expected to earn US$1.1 million only, a reduction of over 28 percent against the same period last year.

Also, some key products tend to reduce their export turnover value, such as agricultural products and construction materials.

According to Nguyen Dinh Thu, vice director of Industry and Trade Department, most medium and small scale enterprises show shortcomings in competitiveness and production capacity, let alone the lack of capital due to high interest, making them face many difficulties.

Alongside these, some slowly applied advanced technologies and didn’t focus on the trade promotion and quality management system in accordance with international standards.

The Department of Industry and Trade has made all out effort to implement its tasks this year. It will support the local businesses through different programs, such as financially supporting businesses in joining domestic and foreign fairs, seeking new markets, and providing Vietnam’s WTO commitment for businesses, etc.

The Department will also ask the relevant bodies to focus on developing industrial zones and craft villages to attract investment, give more attention to the supporting industry, generate the stable sources of raw material, and give more support to wood processing companies.

The local businesses have reaped positive results in early 2011, promising they will reap a “bumper crop”.
