The wind power projects will make a breakthrough in the development of clean energy, according to deputy head of Binh Dinh Economic Zone Authority, Nguyen Ngoc Toan.
An area of 283 hectares in the north of Nhon Hoi EZ was planned to build wind power plants. At present, two wind power projects which have a total capacity of over 50 MW have been implemented, Toan added. Another project which is designed to have the capacity of 120-180 MW is expected to be carried out on the Phuong Mai peninsula.
Toan said Binh Dinh still saw great potential for the wind power development, particularly in Truong Luong, Vinh Hoi, and Tan Thanh.

What are advantages and disadvantages of wind power development?
The most obvious advantage of wind power is clean energy. In addition, the cost for building wind power plants is often lower than other types.
In Binh Dinh, wind power plants are expected to become an attractive tourist destination on the Phuong Mai peninsula.
The only shortcoming is that a wind power project often requires a large area of land. However, the problem could be resolved by developing different tourist services around a wind power plant.
I wonder if the wind capacity in Binh Dinh will be enough for the full operation of wind power plants?
The statistics showed Binh Dinh is one of provinces having great potential for wind power development. Usually, turbines only need a wind capacity of 3m/s to generate power while many parts in Binh Dinh often see an average wind capacity of 6.2 m/s.
Under two wind power projects implemented in Binh Dinh now, many 80-meter turbines will be built.
But the implementation of wind power projects has still taken place slowly. What are the reasons?
Binh Dinh is the first province having a wind power project. A joint venture project was formed in 1997 and the Phuong Mai peninsula and a part of Phu Cat district were selected to build the wind power plant.
However, the construction of Phuong Mai wind power plant was delayed for many times due to different reasons. The project officially kicked off in early 2006.
The main reason is the price. Previously, Vietnam Electricity Corp. (VNE) only wanted to pay 4 cent per kWh to buy wind power but the investors didn’t agree. The PM asked VNE to increase the price by 12 cent per kMh in December, 2010.
After the problem was solved, the wind power projects will be quickly implemented. Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee also shows strong determination to build wind power plants to develop the clean energy resources.
Will the shortage of power be curbed after wind power plants operate in the future?
When the Phuong Mai 1 and 3 wind power plants which have a total capacity of 51 MW start their operation in the future, nearly 150,000 MWh will be generated, adding to the national grid. This is expected to curb the shortage of electricity.
