Thuan Nghia vegetable village which cover an area of 36 hectares in Tay Son District’s Phu Phong Town has planted many kind of green vegetables such as onion, cabbage, salad, and fennel.
It annually supplies to the local market with hundreds of tons of vegetable, bringing significant income to local famers.
However, its production is mainly based on traditional production methods that cause few shortcomings, especially uncontrolled use of dangerous chemicals on vegetable, becoming a major concern for consumers.
The provincial Management board for sustainable rural livelihood project piloted a safe vegetable production model which covers an area of 1 hectare for 28 farmer households in late 2010.
The participants were financially and technically supported to plant vegetable under VietGAP (Good Agricultural Practice) standards.
After 3 months, most of 28 farmer households had a thorough grasp of safe vegetable production technique. They also awoke to consequences of overuse of plant protection agents to farmers and consumers’ health. Since then, they changed their old production methods.
Under the project, a vegetable processing plant worth VND500 million will be build at Thuan Nghia Co-operative in the third quarter of 2011.
This is a good condition helping the Thuan Nghia Co-operative to expand their production scale and provide their safe vegetable for supermarkets inside and outside the province.
According to director of Thuan Nghia Co-operative Dao Van Tri, after the processing plant completing and putting into operation, a purchase and advertising staff will be established.
With the establishment of vegetable processing plant and consumption service of Thuan Nghia Co-operative, the Thuan Nghia farmers have confidence in safe vegetable production model that not only helps them to increase their income but also protects farmers and consumers’ health.
