The project is expected to improve the quality of pickled scallions in Phu My district.

Pickled scallion is one of popular plant in Phu My district of Binh Dinh Province. It has been playing an important role in the local agricultural business. A project to improve its quality has been implemented.

The project has started since January and it is expected to finish by July, 2014 with the total capital of about 3.9 billion VND. It will be mainly carried out in communes of My Trinh, My Hoa, My Hiep, My Quang, My Phong and My Tai where most of the areas are covered with pickled scallion.

There are two crops for pickled scallions growing. The cultivation mainly depends on rain, straw, and pesticide, badly affecting the quality of pickled scallions, let alone other causes.

According to Tran Ngoan, head of provincial union for science and technology associations, Phu My’s pickled scallion is one of the local advantages, offering high economic value; however, the farmers haven’t paid attention to advances in technology.

He said, the project is aimed at increasing the quality and building the brand name for Phu My’s pickled scallions. It also focuses on raising the farmers’ awareness of applying technologies in production.

The project implementation is expected to pave the way for the agricultural business in Phu My district as well as the whole province.
