Plants were grown under the WB3 project in Phuoc An commune.

Of the total natural land area of 3,359 hectares in Phuoc An commune of Tuy Phuoc district, the area for afforestation covers more than 884 hectares of which most was found abandoned before 2005.

The land for afforestation has thrived again since the World Bank-funded forest sector development (WB3) project was implemented, helping the local farmers reduce poverty.

Under the experts’ instruction, the participating farmers successfully carried out the afforestation. 95 percent of plants have been well nurtured, covering abandoned lands in the commune.

More than 72 hectares of plants grown in the first year of the project proved effective in benefiting the participants.

The farmers actively responded to the project, according to the commune’s Vice Chairman Le Van Chinh. 219 households have grown a total of 492.5 hectares of plants since 2005.

Some of the farmers said they got high profit when joining the WB3 project. Nguyen Duc Tri, for example, who grew 5.5 hectare of plants, earned 30 million VND per hectare while Vo Huu Nhan, another farmer in Phuoc An, also got over 70 million VND for the total area of 8 hectares.

The project has generated jobs for rural laborers during their leisure time after crops. The poor households participating in the project are now able to get stable income thanks to the afforestation.
