The World Bank-funded forestry sector development (WB3) project, which has been carried out in communes of Phuoc Thanh and Phuoc An of Tuy Phuoc district since 2006, partly helps local people improve their living standard.

The WB3 project’s forest has been developing well in Phuoc Thanh commune. |
Selected to join the project, 312 households in Phuoc Thanh commune, carefully take care of the WB3’s forest. Over 95 percent of trees have grown well. An area of 1,110 hectares of land has been covered with trees since the project was implemented here.
After 6 six years, the project has brought an average income of 100 million VND per hectare for the participants, according to Truong Van Nguyen, a commune’s official.
The residents now show great enthusiasm for afforestation as they are able to escape from poverty thanks to trees, he added. Cu Van Man, who earned 600 million VND after 6 years, and Nguyen Van San, with over 400 million VND, are two typical examples.
Bui Thanh Hung, another beneficiary of the project, said, “Under the project, my family was allocated an area of 8,400 square meters to grow trees and I earned 85 million VND from the afforestation. If there is no such a project, I could hardly escape from poverty.”
The project partly contributed to improve the rural life. As the afforestation requires a lot of manpower, most local people who have much free time after harvest are able to join the project.
The project is expected to strengthen the local economy in the future, said the commune’s Chairman Cao Van Trung.
