Most households in Thuan Hanh hamlet make conical hats |
Besides farming work, residents in Thuan Hanh hamlet of Tay Son district’s Binh Thuan commune sometimes make conical hats. They also established their own association.
According to the elderly, the making of conical hats were founded nearly 300 years ago. The villagers are often taught how to make conical hats at the age of 10, despite their gender.
Huynh Thi Hong, who married a local man here, also knows how to make conical hats for 15 years. The work has brought them stable income.
The commune’s Chairman Than Anh Tuan said, about 400 household are now focusing on making conical hats, bringing an annual revenue of over 3.5 billion VND. The making of conical hat has generated jobs for hundreds of farmers at their leisure.
The 3 km-road upgrade also creates more favourable conditions for the making of conical hats. The raw material is directly supplied to each house while the dealers also come to the commune to buy conical hats.
Thuan Hanh conical hat village was officially recognized as traditional craft village in 2009. It set up an association in April, 2012, aiming to promote the business as well as protect its brand name.
Tay Son district’s vice chairman Do Van Sy affirmed that the association would gradually resolve the difficulties conical hat makers are facing.
Hopefully, the brand name “Thuan Hanh conical hat” will soon well known nationwide, helping the villagers expand their production scale and increase their income.
