Recent years have seen boisterous growth of book market in Quy Nhon City (Binh Dinh Province). Many new giant players are now joining the ground with the small existing bookshops to satisfy various needs of the readers.
1. In 2003, Gia Lai Culture - Tourism Joint-stock Co. rent a 500-m2 area at Quy Nhon Trade Centre to open a bookshop. This bookshop has been on thriving thanks to its modern furniture and updated books. At present, Quy Nhon Culture Bookshop has over 20.000 book titles. Out of them, textbooks, reference books, children’s books, literature books etc. make up a majority. Average monthly sales in 2006 of bookshop is at VND 1 billion (USD 62,500), in which book sales takes account of 80% while the rest of the figure comes from sales of studying tools and stationery.

In November 2006, another big bookshop, Quy Nhon FAHASA Bookshop, opened in Quy Nhon City. (FAHASA bookshop is under Ho Chi Minh-based Publishing House Joint-stock Co.). The bookshop locates at the most convenient place of 1.200 m3 in Quy Nhon Trade Centre. Out of more than 30.000 Vietnamese Literature books and nearly 200.000 foreign language books sold at ground-floor area, there are stationery sector and entertainment sector in FAHASA Bookshop.
“Because FAHASA is a professional book distributor, it always tries its best to serve its customers” said Mr. Phan Trong Duc, Manager of Quy Nhon FAHASA Bookshop. Moreover, FAHASA has expanded its market through book provision contracts with libraries, unversities and schools in Quy Nhon and through a distribution network to 15 bookshops and book agents in Binh Dinh Province.
2. Binh Dinh Book and School Equipment Co. specializes in manufacture and trade of books, studying facilities, teaching aids and stationary. “We have deals all types of book but mainly target to textbooks for both learners and teachers. Thanks to our well-built distribution network of bookshops and more than 100 agents all over Binh Dinh Province, all of our textbooks always reach the target customers timely” said Director Le Huy. In 2006, the company published roughly 4.5 million different kinds of book and got over VND 21 billion worth of turnover.
However, if the success in selling the textbooks and the teaching aids isn’t taken into account, turnover from other kinds of book and cultural products is just a small figure. The company has now 5 bookshops in Quy Nhon City but all are at small size.
3. Presence of the big bookshops in Quy Nhon City actually vivifies the local book market. This also means that various demands of the readers are fully met. Many newly published best-seller books are now distributed to the readers at the quickest time. The “Living History” by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lies on bookshelves of Quy Nhon FAHASA at the same time with other bookshops nationwide.

In spite of its small size, Quang Trung bookshop can satisfactorily meet students’ demand thanks to its many types of book.

Students specilizing in economics can find specialist business textbooks or journals at 15-50% lower prices deducted from original backcover prices at SG Bookshop (Do Doc Bao Street) and Quang Trung Bookshop (Dien Hong Street). Both of the bookshops opened at the end of 2006 and have been run by former students of Economics Department, Quy Nhon University since then.
Due to competition pressure, the new bookshops usually give discount, organizing sales promotion, even offering door-to-door service to the needy customers within Quy Nhon City.
The recent boom of Quy Nhon book market reflects the fact that a new player still have opportunities to set up its firm standing if it actively develops appropriate bussiness approaches to satisfactorily meet the customers’ demands. Gia Lai Culture-Tourism Joint-stock Co. is going to invest over VND 16 billion worth of total capital in establishment of 3 more new bookshops in Binh Dinh Province within frame of a joint-venture with Binh Dinh Film Production and Cinema Centre. Out of the trios, two will be in Quy Nhon City and one in An Nhon District. Binh Dinh Book and School Equipment Co. are asking for a business permission and seeking location to open a big publication supermarket in Quy Nhon City.
Binh Dinh customers are certainly going to have more options in the book market.
