The 8th Binh Dinh coastal sports-culture festival 2008 takes place from May 19 to 21 in My Tho Commune, Phu My District. Vice Director of Binh Dinh Tourism-Sports and Culture Department Nguyen An Pha talked more about the preparation.

Q: What is the purpose of this year’s festival?

A: We hold the festival with the aim at displaying traditional cultural values. The festival is an opportunity for fishermen to share experiences and participate in sport and cultural activities.

It also aims to promote the solidarity, further the potential of sea economy, and effectively exploit aquatic products.

It is expected to be a jubilant festival taking place under the plan approved by Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee.

Q: What activities will be involved in the festival?

A: The festival will include various activities. The performances of ba trao chanty, folk songs, beauty contest, food and drink, and traditional games will take place together with sporting events such as boat racing, tug-of-war.

The women’s beach volleyball and football tournaments held for the first time are expected to create a more jubilant atmosphere for the festival.

Q: Which activity will be the highlight of the festival?

A: No single activity will be the highlight. All are combined to show unique and traditional features as well as Binh Dinh’s cultural values. Unlike previous festivals, this year’s art performance will include folk songs and bai choi competitions only.

Ba trao chanty, a typical kind of art of fishermen, will also be held this year. Participants must come from a fishing village and follow traditional procedure.

The festival is, therefore, an occasion to perform the most unique features of traditional ba trao chanty.

Q: How about the preparation for the festival?

A: Nearly 600 participants coming from Quy Nhon City, Districts of Tuy Phuoc, Phu My, Hoai Nhon, and provincial border soldiers will take part in the festival. We have well prepared for this event.

Provincial Department of Tourism-Sports and Culture held many meetings with Phu My District People’s Committee to prepare all for the festival. At present, all are ready.

Q: The festival won’t be successful if its programs aren’t well prepared. How did the Organising Board prepare?

A: We have clear terms and conditions. Under these, participants must follow regulations when participating in activities. The Organising Board and referees consist of qualified people. They will work under regulations to ensure fair play. The Organising Board will also try their utmost to make the festival successful.
