Watching their fill with Chinese martial arts in swashbuckling movies, many clicked their tongue, wondering why there are not Binh Dinh martial arts on the screen. Techniques of Vietnamese martial arts seem more attractive than Chinese martial arts. And Binh Dinh martial arts are now dominating the screen.

The scriptwriter Le Hoang Khai was really enthusiastic about using Binh Dinh martial arts in movies. In early 90s, he wrote “Tay Son hiep khach” (Tay Son swashbuckling hero) script in which techniques of Binh Dinh martial arts were used, particularly Ngoc tran (jade cup) fists.

He had spent 20 years visiting many places and people to write the film script. He then wished to make other martial arts movies like “Tinh su mien dat Vo” (the love story in the land of martial arts) and a documentary entitled “nine Masters in Binh Dinh”.

It was a pity that Binh Dinh martial arts hadn’t been used in martial arts movies but “Tay Son swashbuckling hero”.  With “Dong mau anh hung” (the rebels) and “Huyen thoai bat tu” (the eternal legend) Binh Dinh martial arts have been now on the screen again.

“The rebels” has been considered as the best Vietnamese martial arts movie. “The eternal legend” which is scheduled to be presented on Jan. 14 directly relates to Binh Dinh martial arts because Lan, Long’s mother, plays the role as a Binh Dinh’s Master.

There are many action scenes but still logical, highlighting Long’s journey to find his father. Binh Dinh martial arts and other school of Vietnamese martial arts were combined in the film, making action scenes more attractive.

Some stuntmen, who learned Binh Dinh martial arts, were invited to instruct actors to play action scenes, according to director Luu Huynh.

In late 2008, Ly Huynh film studio has made the movie “Tay Son hao kiet” (Tay Son’s hero) about the love of King Quang Trung and Princess Ngoc Han. The movie is expected to be presented by 2010.

Ly Huynh intended to make the movie in 2001, using Binh Dinh martial arts. He has had the script written and selected actors and actress for 7 years. There will be many must-see scenes in the movie, such as the love between General Bui Thi Xuan and Tran Quang Dieu or the fight between Quang Trung and Lo Xich.

Dustin Nguyen, the main character in “the eternal legend”, has just finished “Lua Phat” (the Buddha’s fire) script, a Vietnamese martial arts movie about monks going down the mountain to help the insurgent army fight against the enemy.

Another movie “Song Con mua lu” (Con River in flood season) directed by Nguyen Quoc Hung will be made from the novel by Nguyen Mong Giac. It is about the Tay Son uprising and King Quang Trung, which will require Binh Dinh martial arts.
