The province’s museum is a place preserving cultural and historical items. However, that’s not enough.

Museum is used for studying, collecting, and preserving tangible and intangible cultural relics, playing an important role in education the young generation.

International Council of Museums (ICOM) launched the International Museum Day 2009 on “Museums and Tourism”

Binh Dinh Museum is being oriented towards an attractive tourist destination in the coming time.

Its staff’s work looks calm but busy. They are as busy as a bee to collect and preserve historical items unearthed.

There are now 23,916 relics displayed in the museum, including archaeological objects and many relating to the culture of Nguyen dynasty and ethnic minority groups in Binh Dinh. Most belong to Champa culture, such as potteries and terracotta items.

The museum also carried out many events, aiming to collecting and excavating valuable relics. It had Banh It (Silver) towers restored in 2003, Duong Long towers complex and Canh Tien (Fairy Wings) in 2004.

The newly-established Vestige Management Board separated from the museum is expected to help it fulfill their roles effectively.

However, the museum is now facing a big difficulty. The storage space has been overloaded with many items. Some valuable Cham sculptures are, therefore, being located outside due to the limited storage capacity.

Also, the storage space hasn’t met requirements of temperature, air, or light.

“Apart from its function as a cultural destination, we’ve being strive to develop the museum as an attractive tourist one,” said the museum’s director, Dinh Ba Hoa. “The province’s cultural vestiges have been well known to some extent thanks to the coordination with researchers and the mass media.”

Many experts worldwide visited the museum, proving the effectiveness of the promotion. Some province’s big events were successfully held with the participation of the museum, he added.
