Sa Huynh culture in Binh Dinh

Ancient Sa Huynh Culture was discovered one century ago and has now still attracted attention of domestic and international researchers. So far, about 80 relic sites related to the Sa Huynh Culture have been found in central provinces of Ha Tinh, Binh Dinh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Ngai, Dong Nai, Khanh Hoa and the Central Highlands.”

1. Sa Huynh culture was first mentioned in 1909 when M.Cinet, a French archaeologist, found 200 jars in the Sa Huynh, Duc Pho district, Quang Ngai province.

In 1923, another archaeologist, Labarre, also came to Sa Huynh to search for items in jar shaped coffins. 242 ceramic jar-shaped coffins were unearthed in Thanh Duc and Phu Khuong in 1934.

Colani then continued the search for relics related to Sa Huynh culture at Dong Cuom, Bau Nang, Ca Cong, Phu Nhuan, Cong Luong in Hoai Nhon district, finding many sites where ceramic coffins were buried.

In 1935, Sa Huynh culture-relating vestiges were mentioned in a workshop held in Philippines.

2. The province’s researchers have carried out many archaeological excavations at Dong Cuom, Bau Nang, Ca Cong, Phu Nhuan, Cong Luong (Hoai Nhon district), Truong Xe, Go Loi, Chanh Trach, Thuan Dao (Phu My district), Hoi Loc, Ngang mountain (Quy Nhon) since 1979.

Finding relic sites related to Sa Huynh culture in Binh Dinh showed proof of the existence of residents for a long time in the areas.

At present, nearly 1,841 items including axes, hoes, jewellery and weapons made from stone, animal bones, glass, terracotta, and bronze, which are decorated with fine and unique patterns are displayed at Binh Dinh Museum.

Jar shaped coffins may be considered as the unique feature of Sa Huynh culture. They vary in sizes and shapes, such as cylinder jar, egg shape jar, spherical jar. 64 graves were found in Binh Dinh, locating in group in different burial grounds.

The belongings of the death such as jewellery, ceramic, and stone items were also found in the jar-shaped coffins.

It has been 100 years since Sa Huynh culture was found. However, discoveries about Sa Huynh culture are still being carried out.
