Martial arts Master Nguyen Xuan Binh

Whenever mentioning martial arts, Master Phi Long always talked about Master Nguyen Xuan Binh in admiration. He is now living in Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands). Ngoc Tu reports.

1. Master Nguyen Xuan Binh was born in 1917 in Cat Chanh commune’s Phu Hau hamlet. Many his family members also mastered martial arts. His maternal grandfather taught him martial arts when he was 14. Binh then was taught by the village chief Kiem and Master Doan Phong.

He began to join some tournaments in An Nhon, Tay Son, and Hoai Nhon, mainly aiming to share experience with the others. “

He earned a living as a martial arts Master. He went everywhere, such as Nha Trang, Phan Rang, Dak Lak, HCM City, and Dong Nai and joined martial arts competitions and sought opportunities to open a martial arts club.

He had chances to learn different martial arts schools, but his unique techniques have still remained intact.

At that time, he was one of founders of Vietnam Martial Arts Federation in Sai Gon. Binh and other martial arts Masters, including Ho Van Lanh, Tran Xil, and Ly Huynh were honored for training many excellent martial arts students, particularly disciple Xuan Lieu who is now a famous martial arts Master in An Giang province.

When coming to Dong Nai province’s Bien Hoa town, Binh opened a martial arts club and taught many disciples from Southern provinces Binh Dinh martial arts. Also, he taught them some simple remedies and the ways to make full recovery.

2. In 1975, Binh and his family moved to Buon Ho in Dak Lak province. He then opened a martial arts club there. “I haven’t returned to Binh Dinh in the past two years due to ill health,” he said. “I always visited my friends, such as Masters Phi Long, Phan Tho, Ha Trong Son, and Phi Long Vinh when coming home.”

It’s his cheerful attitude, particularly his devotion to Binh Dinh martial arts, that makes many martial arts Masters admire him.

In 1992, Binh and his disciple, martial arts Master Nguyen Van Tuyen, had the book on Tay Son martial arts published.

In 2005, he was really happy when his martial arts facilities were built. In the martial arts club dedicated to the Emperor Quang Trung, there is also an exhibition room displaying pictures and valuable documents about Binh Dinh martial arts.

Upon inaugurating the martial art club, Binh invited some officials representing Binh Dinh’s sport and physical training sector to attend the ceremony.

“The representatives of local authority also came there,” vice director of Binh Dinh Department of Culutre, Sports, and Tourism, Nguyen Van Minh, recalled. “The ritual was solemnly held with many Binh Dinh martial arts performances.”

His club has attracted more and more disciples since it was established. At present, his grandson Nguyen Xuan Linh Vu is in charge of the club. Vu said he would make all-out effort to develop Binh Dinh martial arts.
