“Special” historical character of stage
The relation between Binh Dinh and Thang Long – Ha Noi over hundreds of years, from the Tran dynasty to the Tay Son dynasty, has been always an attracting theme and a great source of inspiration for art works.
The resounding victory of Quang Trung-Nguyen Hue, the relation between Nguyen Hue and feudal intellectuals in Thang Long in particular and the northern region in general, as well as the love between Nguyen Hue and the Princess Ngoc Han have always been the great themes for many art works of all kind, particularly stage works.
The workshop’s participants all agreed that rare were the national heroes, except Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue, who had “unique” characteristics and attracted such a large number of writers and artists.
Hundreds of art works and plays with new humanism viewpoints about Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue and the Tay Son Uprising have been created since the August Revolution, revealed the preliminary statistics.
At the workshop, a script collection about the relation between Binh Dinh – Tay Son and Thang Long – Ha Noi was introduced. “We collected 51 screenplays of tuong (classical drama), cheo (traditional opera), bai choi (a performance-slash-game in which participants bet on the missing words of poems or folksongs), play and play in verse, cai luong (reformed theatre) with much devotion and are considering selecting the 16 best scripts for a book publishing,” said Prof. Hoang Chuong.
“The work is the achievement of writers and stage artists nationwide in general and in Binh Dinh in particular aiming to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Ha Noi.”
Two Binh Dinh – born writers Van Trong Hung and Le Duy Hanh also contributed two scripts entitled “Hero and Beauty” (script adapted by Si Chuc) and “the Southern Region”, respectively.
The Binh Dinh Bai choi troupe performed the former and Dao Tan Tuong Theatre staged the latter very successfully, gaining resounding fame at national professional stage festivals.
A workshop of full emotion
At the age of 95, Prof. Vu Khieu tried to attend the workshop. “I always feel strong attachment to Binh Dinh, the hometown of the national hero and the land of culture and civilization…,” he said.
Many speeches at the workshop, including The image of Emperor Quang Trung and Thang Long culture by Assoc.Prof., Dr.Tat Thang, or Comment on the play “Hero and Beauty” by researcher Nguyen The Khoa, aroused enjoyable emotion among the participants through their new points of view and attractive presentation skills of the researchers and the artists.
The meritorious artist Bach Tuyet presented her speech on the image of Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue as a historical figure and symbol of art in form of informal talk with her attractive cai luong singing. Her presentation aroused a strong sentiment toward the national hero.
An extract of the play “Hero and Beauty” - “Night at Phu Xuan” – was performed by two young artists Thuy Dung and Hoai Tam. Their performance left the strongest impression to the participants.
“The extract was a live speech which is as attractive as a hundred-page presentation,” commented Prof. Hoang Chuong.
“The workshop is useful, firstly to the participants who “listen” comprehensive and profound speeches on the images of the national hero Quang Trung – Nguyen Hue and the Tay Son Uprising,” said the Meritorious Artist, acting leader of Performing Arts Department Vuong Duy Bien.
“They should make more effort to create more excellent works of art about this vast theme.”
