Mr. Phuc is crafting a sand painting at the SQ Art Gallery

The birth of SQ Art Gallery (at 92 Mai Xuan Thuong Street), which specializes in sand painting, offers Quy Nhon people a chance to access the unique form of art.

Owner of the SQ Art Gallery is Mr. Vo Khac Phuc, 37, who has various hobbies – old Vespa motorcycle collection and photography.

He also enrolled in a fine arts training course organized by Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association. One day, he was attracted to the sand painting as he was feasting his eyes on such the pictures at Ho Chi Minh city.

Phuc then decided to take a 6-month training course on sand painting instructed by the famous artist Y Lan. After finishing the course, he opened the SQ Art Gallery in Quy Nhon.

“I want to bring an opportunity for Quy Nhon people to enjoy the sand painting – a unique form of art which has just been born  but developed quickly in Vietnam” – says Phuc.

The gallery was opened over a month ago. Its products include art pictures, symbols, architectural building, flowers, portraits, landscapes, and calligraphic letters.

The gallery also creates paintings as customers need. Phuc has so far collected more than 50 kinds of coloured sand by rivers, streams, mountains and beaches all over Binh Dinh as natural materials for his paintings.

“The sand painting creation has many steps: search and collect the coloured sand, make samples of pictures depending on themes, and craft the works.

Artist uses a small spoon to carefully pour the sand into a transparent glass vase. As the sand is forming designed details, the artist gently presses the sand down with the spoon so that the sand combines together. Then the artist pours in mixed sand to the centre of the vase to keep the sand tight and the outer layer become unmovable.

The artist continues with another layer until the vase is full. Just a small negligence can fail the meticulous effort and the artist has no way to repair the errors but pours out the sand and restarts the whole process.

Of all kinds of sand painting, portrait painting is the most difficult. In order to create a lively portrait with its own characteristics, the artist must have knowledge of painting and must be very patient and detail-focused.” – adds Phuc.

The young owner of the gallery has created impressive paintings of Twin Cham towers, Quang Trung Emperor Statue.

He expects to create more works about typical landscapes and symbolic buildings in Binh Dinh; create portrait paintings of couples as impressive, nature-friendly souvenirs.
