The Ngoc Hoi – Dong Da victory plays a historical significant role in the spring of 1789 when the Tay Son insurgent army, under the leadership of Nguyen Hue, defeated 290,000 Qing invaders and took back freedom and independence for the nation. It is annually celebrated in many places on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year.

The celebration of the 222nd anniversary of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory attracted thousands of people to flock to Tay Son this year.

The ceremony was solemnly held at the Quang Trung Museum in Tay Son district on the fourth day of the first lunar month which falls on Feb. 6.

Many activities took place during two days, attracting many domestic and foreign visitors. Anyone who came here could easily see many parents explaining the history of the Tay Son movement and Emperor Quang Trung to their children.

Most young people visited places where many historical objects are displayed. They were really interested in these items.

“I visited the museum for several times when I was a child,” said Van Hung, a Quang Trung University’s student. “I felt moved and proud of the history of the Tay Son movement when coming back here with my friends.”

The ancient tamarind tree grown on the left of the Tay Son Tam Kiet Temple also attracted many visitors. Nguyen Luu and Tran Luc, two local elderly people, sat under the tree and reviewed their memories.

“We grew up with the tamarind tree,” said Luu. “When we were children, we often climbed the tree and picked the tamarinds.”

Coming to the Truong Trau wharf on these days, people could see a bustling atmosphere as thousands of locals and visitors came here to enjoy the boat racing festival.

“The boat race is one of traditional events when the spring comes,” said vice director of Tay Son district’s center of culture-sport, Nguyen Van Tan.

Due to the natural feature of the Con River the participants have to wade through the water to push their boats before rowing. People enjoyed the race and wildly cheered all participants.

Also, a traditional martial arts tournament took place at the district’s stadium during these days. 50 martial arts practitioners joined the tournament, attracting thousands of spectators and making the Tet holiday become more bustling.
