Binh Dinh’s bai choi artists will perform at the festival

The national bai choi (singing while playing cards) festival is scheduled to take place in Quy Nhon from April 5-8.  Head of the Bureau of Art Performances, Vuong Duy Bien, talks more about the event.

Could you reveal the purpose of the festival?

The festival will be held for the first time, aiming to honor the art of bai choi and artists who have devoted themselves to bai choi. The event will see the participation of three bai choi and folk song troupes coming from provinces of Quang Nam, Binh Dinh, and Khanh Hoa.

They will show their works in the past years. The artists will also have a chance to share experiences with each other.

The festival is a part of the activities responding to the 2011 National Tourism Year.

What will the festival focus on?

It aims to honor talents for performing bai choi. As for old artists, the festival will acknowledge their effort in preserving this kind of art and, as for young artists, this will be an encouragement.

Alongside this, the participating artists who meet criteria will be presented gold and silver medals.

The organizing board won’t judge any works as it is quite difficult for the troupes to prepare for a new bai choi play. Honoring bai choi artists, thus, also means honoring the art of bai choi.

Under the regulations, each troupe will perform two works at the festival.

What will the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism plan to uphold the value of bai choi?

The festival is of national magnitude and the participating artists will be honored. This is expected to encourage artists to continue their job.

It is a pity that there won’t be any workshops held due to the limited time. However, the ministry will assist the bai choi troupes and artists in training and composing new works after the festival.

At present, the preparation for the festival is ready. The art of bai choi is expected to make a breakthrough and deserve a better position among other kinds of arts when the festival ends on April 8.
