Believe in young artists

We were surprised and happy when enjoying the young artists’ performances, said Head of the judge panel of the National Tuong Festival, Le Duy Hanh. We do believe in the young artists even though their performances were not absolutely excellent.

Prospects

Most participating Tuong troupes and Theatres brought young artists to the festival, allowing them to perform the typical roles of Tuong art

Many young artists of Vietnam Tuong Theatre successfully performed two tuong plays Son Hau and That Hien Quyen. They won 5 gold and 7 silver medals. Their partners coming from Da Nang-based Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatre also won 5 gold and 2 silver medals by performing two plays Luu Kim Dinh giai gia thanh Tho Chau and Dao Phi Phung.

Thanh Hoa Tuong troupe and Hue Royal Palace Arts troupe brought the play Ngon lua Hong Son to the event, but each still showed their own features thanks to the young artists’ talent and creativeness. They were awarded with 3 gold and 2 silver medals.

Other troupes coming from HCM City and Khanh Hoa province also shared 2 gold and 3 silver medals while Dao Tan Tuong Theatre’s young artists were honored with 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

Alongside these, 3 young artists were honored as the best ones and 4 received the prize for the potential artists.

Post-festival issues

Many young artists showed their potential for Tuong art during the event. However, they still have some shortcomings in their performances while the judge panel only based on “reasonable” requirements to evaluate their roles. The audience, for example, couldn’t clearly hear their voice when they were performing on the stage.

Some troupes subjectively renovated the traditional Tuong plays when performing them at the festival. “There should be seminars and workshops on Tuong art in the coming time, creating a new environment for creativeness and discussing issues related to the preservation and development of Tuong art,” said Le Duy Hanh.

In addtion to Vietnam and Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatres, other troupes still caused trouble as their young artists are not good enough to shoulder the responsibility for preserving and developing Tuong art in the future, particularly the young artists of Dao Tan Tuong Theatre.

After the festival, the Department of Art Performances will assist Tuong troupes and Theatres in preserving and developing the Tuong art and they will propose a plan on manpower training, particularly the young artists for Tuong troupes nationwide, according to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Le Tien Tho.
