Being one of two traditional art troupes in Binh Dinh, the bai choi folksong troupe owns some young artists as one of its distinctive advantages for further development. However, they are still facing many difficulties.

The local bai choi artists perform at the national bai choi and folksong festival 2011.

Half of artists working at Binh Dinh bai choi troupe age from 25-35; moreover, they are really talented. This is the result of the cooperation between Binh Dinh culture and arts secondary school and the troupe.

They have coordinated with each other in training students since the first course (1978-1981). The school is responsible for facilities while the artists of the troupe are in charge of training students.

Most students attending the bai choi courses at the school have received scholarships from the school and the troupe.

“Thanks to the cooperation, students are always qualified to work after finishing their four-year course,” said Hoai Hue, the troupe’s vice deputy.

Participating in the national bai choi and folksong festival 2011, the young artists of Binh Dinh bai choi troupe showed their talent through two plays which brought them four gold and six silver medals after the festival closed.

However, there haven’t got any new bai choi courses opened since the latest course (2000-2004) ended 10 years ago.

The low income is one of the main reasons halting many young people who are interested in bai choi art follow bai choi courses. “A bai choi artist could only earn VND50.000 for performing a role,” said an artist. “Thus we couldn’t rely on the stage to earn our living; however, we want to devote all time to bai choi.”

Not only bai choi artists but those who work at the Tuong troupe require a preferential policy so that they are able to fully focus on their job.
