“We learnt a lot as joining festival”

Athletes compete in the stick pushing contest at the Vietnamese ethnic festival.

Known as the architect of ethnic sports in Binh Dinh, Vo Dinh Hung, an official of Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, talks more about the issue after attending the Vietnamese ethnic festival in the central and Central Highlands region.

Binh Dinh’s team won 6 gold, 5 silver, 7 bronze medals at the festival held in Phu Yen from July 1-5. Does the result satisfy you?

All athletes and I are very glad with the achievement as we won many medals and contributed to the success of the event. Also, we experienced many issues which may be useful for the athletes in the future.

You said you would focus on the organisation of stilt running race. Will you ask to add the race in the program of the province’s mountainous culture-sport festivals?

The stilt running race is not popular in Binh Dinh. The organisation of the race is quite simple. However, I want to improve this kind of sport by organizing a football match with stilt. Playing football with stilt is expected to make the program of a festival more attractive. We are waiting for the leader’s steering and the respond from localities.

You said you didn’t pay much attention to the result, but you spent many days preparing for the festival.

Athletes and I spent many days preparing for the festival as we want to improve the crossbows brought to the event. The improvement helped athletes win many medals even though they are not the most outstanding athletes of Binh Dinh.

It seems you pay much attention to equipment and clothing for athletes. Is that right?

That’s true. Alongside other factors, suitable equipment and clothing also play an important role in the athletes’ success. In the stilt running race, for example, due to the lack of experience, Binh Dinh’s athletes had to run with the stilts which are 3 times heavier than those used by competitors coming from other province.
