H’re cultural treasure

The individual role in the development of mass art performance is very important. The artist Dinh Van Mien living in An Lao district is a typical example. He is a living treasure of H’re culture.

Dinh Van Mien (sitting on the left) is carrying out a ritual at the mountainous Culture-Sport Festival 2011.

An Lao brought many young athletes and artists to the mountainous Culture- Sport Festival in Vinh Thanh district. Among them, 51-year-old Dinh Van Mien is the oldest participant.

Being head of a hamlet, Mien doesn’t have “artistic” characters like Bok Hay in Hoai An or village patriarch Chi Thanh in Phu Cat. He is truly a farmer.

However, whenever there are any culture-sport events, he actively joins and carefully prepares for performances.

Mien is able to persuade young people who don’t pay much attention to traditional art to join the events, making them feel proud of the local traditional culture, according to the young artist Dinh Thi Minh Tam.

He is now in charge of carrying out all traditional rituals at the festivals. Also, Mien often plays an important role in different events at the commune as he is capable of playing many traditional musical instruments.

According to the local authorities, Mien is known as a treasure of H’re folk songs. His house sees many valuable musical instruments which could be categorized as intangible cultural heritage.
