Tay Son district is known as one of cradles of traditional martial arts. Its local authorities has proposed a scheme entitled “Preserving and developing traditional martial arts in Tay Son district”, aiming to develop its tourism and trade.
Many young people and students in Tay Son show great enthusiasm in practicing traditional martial arts as the local authorities give special concern to the issue. Famous martial arts masters’ clubs have contributed to uphold the quintessence of traditional martial arts.
The district is now seeing 21 martial arts clubs and more than 500 martial arts practitioners. Among them, two clubs run by masters Ho Sung and Phan Tho have always reaped the best achievements at contests of provincial magnitude.
However, practicing traditional martial arts still sees some problems. Most of the practitioners only gather at the clubs in the summer while the facilities are not enough, affecting their development. Also, some martial arts masters are not qualified enough to instruct other practitioners effectively.
Alongside these, many young masters often focus on skills for self-defense; thus, the techniques featuring the traditional kungfu may face the risk of sinking into oblivion.
“Preserving and developing Tay Son martial arts is a top priority,” said director of Tay Son district’s Culture-Information-Sport center, Ho Quang Canh. The scheme focuses on six main tasks, including State management, consolidation of martial arts association and villages, and combination of martial arts and tourism, he added.
Some key measures were proposed, such as building professional performance teams at martial arts villages and clubs, teaching martial arts at some schools, and focusing on two Ho Sung and Phan Tho’s clubs.
The district will also coordinate with relevant bodies to form panels to study and collect documents related to Tay Son martial arts, serving the purpose of preservation.
The infrastructure is to given special concern in the coming time, helping martial arts practitioners join tourism programs and traditional festival. Annually, there will be festivals and contests, aiming to help martial arts club compete against each other and honor outstanding practitioners.
