A new group of artists was formed in late 2009, aiming to train the next generation for Dao Tan Tuong (Vietnamese classical drama) Theatre. Initially, the group has proved effectively.

The group’s new artists are practicing a new play at Dao Tan Tuong Theatre. |
It includes many young artists who graduated from secondary schools. They show talents for singing and dancing and great enthusiasm for becoming Tuong artists. The group now has 20 artists.
The number of artists will be higher or lower than the current figure, depending on their talents and enthusiasm, according to the Theatre’s director Hoang Ngoc Dinh. The Theatre will continue to recruit more artists for the group in the coming years to select the best ones.
The participating young artists have joined some programs, performing in some localities in Binh Dinh and neighboring provinces. They brought a new atmosphere to the Tuong stage.
Minh Trang, Hoang Dung, and Thanh Truc are the typical artists of the group. They used to be well-known singers and then become Tuong artists. Nguyen Tran Binh, born in 1988 and Do Thi Phuong, born in 1991, had graduated from HCM City-based Dancing School. They decided to join the Theatre.
After joining the group for two years, the young artists have still been trained. “Among 20 new artists, we couldn’t know who is better, but all of them are trying their utmost in practicing and we hope they all will be attached to Tuong art,” said artist Phuong Thao, who is in charge of the group.
As they didn’t major in Tuong, their training course at the Theatre is quite different. The group members had to play a role as audience in the first months and they are now practicing the basic techniques of Tuong art. As planned, they will practice some extracts, such as Princess Sami meets Prince Si Thon, Nguyet Co becomes a fox, and Dinh Thoat Hoan in the 2011-2012 period.
Hopefully, the new artists will well coordinate with veteran ones to meet the demand for Tuong artists in Binh Dinh in the near future.
