Quang Xa village located in Quang Binh Province’s Quang Trach district is known as “the village of musicians” as members of the Duong family born here are talents in music. They are living everywhere, particularly in Ha Noi and Thua Thien Hue while Duong Viet Hoa chose to live in Binh Dinh Province. His three works, including dao xa (remote island), su song cua cai chet (the life of the dead) and trong dong Ngoc Lu (Ngoc Lu bronze drum), were on the curriculum at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
The musician Duong Viet Hoa is now a member of Vietnam Musicians’ Association. He said his family is his biggest “music legacy”. His uncle Duong Viet A is a famous musician, let alone other relatives who are also well known as talents in music.
“I learnt music at the age of 7 and my first works were selected to be broadcast on Vietnam Broadcasting Station when I was 13,” Hoa said. “Since then I’ve composed many songs for my classmates to perform at different events.”
After being demobilized, he studied at Hue Music Academy. Initially, Hoa’s works focused on genres of romance and serenade, but he then composed various genres used for different musical instruments.
Among them, 14 were on the curriculum at some conservatories and art schools nationwide. Hoa also wrote many works for special events, such as Hue Festival, the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi, and Phong Nha-Ke Bang festival.
Some of his choruses are disseminated nationwide. Also, he composed some songs about Binh Dinh, like Apsara’s love and Phuoc Son lullaby.
The musician Hoang Hai said, Hoa is greatly capable of composing works for instrumental music and symphony. To do this, the composer has not only concrete knowledge of all musical instruments but abundant creativeness and real-life experience.
Each of his works proves his seriousness and something new. His works for instrumental music always create strong emotion thanks to their various melodies.
Hoa is quite a weird man, according to other musicians in Binh Dinh. The ups and downs in his life made him have different views of people. However, one thing that we must admit is his talent and enthusiasm for music.
Hoa is usually invited to teach at some universities. He is also known as a music critic who had some highly-appreciated articles on Gongs of Bana, Khan Ede ethnic minority groups published. At present, he is studying the Tay Son martial arts music.
Devoting a half of his life to music, Hoa still said, “I’ll never stop.”
