Facing the fact that folk songs have been consigned to oblivion, some localities in Quy Nhon city made every effort in building playgrounds of folk song lovers.

Tran Phu ward’s veterans’ association set up a Bai Choi club in May of 2011. Initially, there were only 12 members, but it now has 30 people coming from outside.

“We have a meeting once a month with the participation of local artists,” said the club’s vice chairman Nguyen Thanh Duc. “We also organize some performances on special events under the sponsorship of enterprises, helping its members enjoy different folk songs.”

Participating in the city’s coastal festival for culture and sport, the club’s members contributed to help the ward’s team to win the first prize for the folk performance.

The folk song preservation also sees progress in the city’s communes, particularly Nhon Hai. Joining the festival, its team came first in the Bai Choi contest and won two second prizes in face-to-face singing contest and folk performance.

The team’s members have frequently practiced singing folk songs before joining the event. According to a member of Nhon Hai team, the Bai Choi club was formed by a monk in Giac Hai pagoda one year ago, attracting 20 local people. The participants always practice together to monthly perform folk songs on the first day and the 15th day, helping them feel confident when attending the festival.

Their success is expected to pave the way for the establishment of similar clubs in other areas in the province. However, it’s necessary to focus on quality, not quantity. The Hai Cang ward’s women union, for example, established a lullaby and fold song club in 2009, but its members only hold meetings together every three months, let alone the lack of money for operation. Perhaps, because of this, Hai Cang’s team didn’t win any high prizes when competing against other teams at the festival.
