Coming to Nhon Chau in Cu Lao Xanh (Quy Nhon city), you don’t miss a chance to visit the highest and modernest lighthouse in Vietnam.
The lighthouse of Nhon Chau was built in 1899, aiming to signal for ships and fishermen and, more importantly, claim the country's sovereignty. The French mobilized a large number of laborers to built it within three years.
The lighthouse is 118 meters high above the sea level, of which the light-tower is 16 meter high with the diameter of 3 meter. The 12-volt light bulb can illuminate the area of 25 nautical miles thanks to a special lens. The sun power is used to operate the light from 6 am to 6 pm each day. In the rain season, therefore, tens of diesel engines must be used to ensure its operation.
Under the lighthouse situate a quarter of two-storey buildings with 16 rooms and a stone cave. A staff of five people are responsible for the lighthouse. They have to live far from home, separating from the rest of the world. Their duty is to keep the light illuminate day and night.
Many people, including students from universities and foreigners, have visited the lighthouse so far. Standing on the balcony of the top of the lighthouse, you will be able to see Nhon Chau commune along the beach, fishing boats, and Quy Nhon city. Such beautiful scenes can make all feel happy.
