Such names as Hoang Tuan and Trang Xuan Chi have become so familiar with Binh Dinh Newspaper readers. They are the authors of many photos in the newspaper. They are “amateur” photographers.
1. Hoang Tuan was born in My Phong commune, Phu My District. He is, therefore, fond of taking photos of the countryside and farmers.
When studying at Hue University, he began to love taking photographs as one of his hobbies. Seeing a beautiful sight or a thoughtful face, Tuan often thought of how to take photos of that sight or face. To possess a camera was nearly impossible with a poor student at that time.
With a strong desire for photography, he enrolled in a photography course opened in Nha Trang city after graduation. He then bought a quite good camera and always brings it with him to catch all moments on his way.
Not many photos haven’t been published in newspapers, but that is enough for him to pursue his enthusiasm.
“The photography brings me a different view of sceneries and life,” said Hoang Tuan. “Sometimes looking at my photos, I felt happy and proud of myself for I didn’t miss the beauty I saw.”
2. Trang Xuan Chi, who is well known in charitable activities and humanitarian aid, doesn’t remember when he became a photographer.
When working as a male nurse at the military zone 4, his superior presented him with a camera bought in the Soviet Union.
But he also assigned Chi to use the camera to take photos for work. He took thousands of photos during many years. His memories of soldiers’ life were vividly showed in black and white photos.
After working at Binh Dinh Red Cross, it seems that he is sad and happy with unfortunate people he’s met. “I seem to be obsessed with patients’ hopeless eyes and their relative’s pains,” he said. “Initially, I took photos to illustrate the information calling on the donation. But I’ve gradually taken photos of typical moments after realizing the strength of beautiful pictures.”
By that way, his photo named “Phut giay cang thang” (the tense moment) won a bronze medal at the central and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) region photo contest 2006.
He has no photos of picturesque landscapes due to his job. His photo of an AO/dioxin victim in Cat Son commune was also selected to print in a leaflet calling on the rights for Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims in the US.
3. Photographers in the central province of Binh Dinh are not alone. Binh Dinh Photography Branch is their home. It is amateur photographers who have partly contributed to the development of the province’s photography
